I booked a submarine excursion with Atlantis in Cozumel. Every time I go on one of these types of expeditions something interesting happens. The shuttle driver that picked me up at my hotel was new, I found out later. He drops me off somewhere in downtown Playa del Carmen alone and drives away, when he was supposed to rendezvous with Paul from Atlantis who has my ferry tickets. I had to find the terminal and get my own tickets. I missed the 10 o'clock ferry, so took the 11, and thought I may be late for my sub trip scheduled for noon. It takes 45 minutes to get to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen by boat. Paul, who must have taken one of the ferries, was supposed to chaperone me to the sub offices, but I didn't know that and was in a big hurry so hailed a taxi for 950 pesos after getting off the ferry. Atlantis called me on the way and said a driver had been waiting at the dock. They were probably as confused as me. I told them I got into a cab and was 10 minutes away. Tour goers may have had to wait a few minutes, but I got there and went on the dive. The submarine is parked at sea so a second boat trip is required. It is a long day of traveling. The ferry ride back to Playa del Carmen was surprisingly rough, and there were a few sea sick passengers. When I finally met him, Paul said he was surprised I made it by myself. He is an interesting fellow, and guides the tours in four different languages, English, Spanish, German, and French. If you like adventures and don't scuba dive I highly recommend Atlantis.

This reef is on the edge of an 1800 foot trench. From the surface you can see a distinct difference in color between the relatively shallow and deep areas of the ocean bottom.
