Dan's Tackle Box

Quinapoxet River, West Boylston, and Unionville Pond, Holden, MA, 3/19/2016

The Quinapoxet River and the Stillwater River both dump into the Wachusett Reservoir and both offer year round trout fishing in Massachusetts. I have not been to the Stillwater yet, but plan to soon, and visited the Quinapoxet for the first time today. Neither has been stocked this year, but soon will be. Today I parked at the lot off Thomas Street in West Boylston and walked the Mass Central Rail Trail, drifting nightcrawlers with spinning gear along the way. There is also parking for the rail trail on River Street in Holden. Above the pump house fishing is allowed all year. I saw no trout. It made me think of how at the Swift River in Belchertown at least you always see trout, even if they are educated. Popular spots are the Cable Pool, and any of the bridges that cross the Quinnie, like the one at the gage in Holden. Next time I will be bringing my fly rod. Once it is stocked fishermen come out of the woods to throw PowerBait and take their catch home for dinner, or throw flies and catch and release. On my way home I stopped at Unionville Pond and caught a sunfish. There was a lot of action on this pond.
