Largemouth Bass and Cicada Killer Wasps at Ashland Reservoir, Ashland, MA, 7/26/2014

Caught 2 largemouth bass
ashland reservoir

The eastern cicada killer wasps are big. They grow to 2", and are called killers because they kill cicadas, not people. These wasps live in the ground, preferring sand, clay, grassy areas, pathways, and embankments. The vast majority I saw here today were over 1", and were in great numbers. Males do not sting. Females are bigger than the males, and do sting, but only if really provoked. They live only a few weeks. Here is a wiki article about them.
